5 out of 5 stars Great Game!   March 20, 2010
Ernesto Fernando (Seattle, WA USA)
This game is by far the best version of the Civilization series, the gameplay is easy to learn right from the start and the graphics are incredible!

4 out of 5 stars Still Quirky Combat   March 19, 2010
Sci-fi and history reader (NJ, USA)
The price makes the purchase of this turn based game collection worthwhile for fans of Civilization for city building and research. No need to have fast reflexes in constantly moving your mouse to direct your units in a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game. What is needed is a lot of patience as the game can get very, very tedious at times in constantly building the same structures for each city to grow and expand.

The basics of the game is to establish cities, build structures to increase population, research technologies to build new structures and units, improve adjacent squares for either food production, income, or construction points. Expand and develop your civilization and have a strong military to protect your cities against your neighbors. Trying to win the game militarily takes a lot of patience due to the combat quirks in the game.

There are many areas in need for improvement. The combat resolution system has not improved or evolved since Civ II. It is still very quirky where 1870 era cavalry can attack and destroy 2000 era tanks or modern artillery will take damage from trebuchets? The combat system is perhaps the most glaring and infuriating weakness of the series that should have been corrected and improved.

It becomes very tedious where the player has to constantly send in individual units, one at a time, to attack a square. The computer has some strange program that chooses which unit will defend against the attack. Case in point, one game, had two WW2 era artillery units and three WW2 era infantry units defending against an attacking force of 1800's artillery. My WW2 era artillery did not defend, but the infantry did, the result, my units took collateral damage and his artillery somehow survived each attack? For some reason, the combat calculation does not include weapons ranges in determining battles. We all know that WW2 infantry units had rifles and machine guns that have farther ranges than 1800's artillery.

The same quirky combat applies when attacking, my 2000 era artillery would be killed when attacking / firing against 1860's era riflemen, what? Yes, we all know that modern artillery fires from greater ranges than 1860's rifles and would not be in the direct line of return fire.

The developers really need to fix the combat resolution where it becomes more like a board game and stacks of units are combined into one battle at the end of the turn with sequenced resolution based on a weapon's range. Example WW2 infantry would get to fire before a medieval pikeman would get to attack or modern artillery would fire first before a catapult. However, this is not the case, for some reason, a catapult can attack and cause collateral damage to your WW2 era infantry. Very strange and unrealistic.

City capture is also strange with your civilization's culture, not the number of units garrisoning it being the primary factor on its conversion. What is even more frustrating is when a city you captured in battle gets converted over to a neighboring neutral country because they have higher cultural influence in being closer than your existing cities. Not fun.

Spy missions are neat, but defending them ridiculous. For some reason, lower tech and lower cultural civilizations can infiltrate your garrisoned cities, defended with spies, police station, counter intelligence bureaus, 25%+ of your budget dedicated to espionage, etc, and they still are successful in sabotaging your city. Frustrating.

Another area for improvement is the manual. No where does it explain how to reduce the unhappiness of your city due to overcrowding. Another area is the use of specialists and how they improve your civilization / cities output. The instructions manual is very lacking and only experienced and patient Civ players will be able to tolerate and learn.

Movement of units has improved where instead of using the keyboard to move each unit over each square, the player just needs to click on the square. Care must be taken however, as damaged units may take a route that is not desired and be exposed to an attack.

Movement is also frustrating where attacking units do not get movement bonuses from moving on a defending player's roads. The defending player with railroads can move all over their country and counterattack you in huge stacks of 1870's cavalry while your modern era tanks and mechanized infantry can only move one or two squares per turn. Yes, for some reason, pikemen can move the same amount of squares as your WW2 era Marines and Paratroopers.

The expansion, Beyond the Sword, is very good with many scenarios and variants for experienced Civ players to enjoy. Really liked the modification of the "space zombie" game - Afterworld. This modification has your team moving from point to point to complete different tasks. Your handful of units gain experience, can stop and heal over turns. As the units gain experience, they can gain additional abilities, movement and shooting range being the most important to have. The zombies do spawn every turn in frustratingly close proximity each turn. But the mod is lots of fun and was a very enjoyable experience. It is basically just one long mission, moving across the board to complete the game. There are many fan submitted mods to play in the Beyond the Sword expansion, which are fun scenarios to play as they are focused on one era or technology that minimizes the combat inequities.

Note: Other reviewers have mentioned install problems, but fortunately, none were experienced on the Duo-Core Thinkpad. The game is a full install, with no need for the disc to play again, plus no DRM restrictions.

The game mechanics overall, have not improved since Civilization II, only the graphics. The collection is a good value if you enjoy turn based city building and the scenarios in the Beyond the Sword expansion make the purchase worthwhile. This game is not suited for everyone. Improvements to the previous quirks in combat should have been addressed in Civilization IV, especially after the multitude of complaints from Civilization III, where pikemen units were able to destroy multiple full strength tank units.

1 out of 5 stars Swordsmen could take down helicopters!   March 15, 2010

I only wish I spent more time researching this series before making a regretful purchase.

I liked RISK, but this was just a cheap attempt at competing with Ages of Empires.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected   March 6, 2010

This game is exactly what I expected. Though it is rather old, I only got it now, because my old computer did not support it, and I was expecting a Complete edition like this one.

Every Civ game has kept the same essence, but added more. That essence is mixing fun, with thinking. I like to kill zombies and play guitar once in a while, but this TBS game just relaxes me. I forget about work and daily routine, which is what I want from a game - FUN and RELAX!!

I started with old Civ in DOS, then I got Civ II, which added complexity, fun, graphics and sophistication, while keeping the core concepts which made it so addictive. Civ III added the culture and related concepts, I spent years playing that game and it expansions.

And now Civ IV, faithful to this concept, has added religions, civics, and two awesome exp-packs. And a great PLUS: you can play it without the CD, which means I can play it in a long flight!! Yeah, sure it has some things that I would have done differently. But, looking at it on the bright side, I will play this until I get sick, and I hope sometime in the future, we all can have fun with a Civ 5.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Game   March 5, 2010

I've played all three prior to this and seems to be a good 4th edition
to the series. Been busy for a while and took a temp medical condition
to get me to try this one out. Played Civ4 twice and and BTS looks
interesting. Fired up the other two to see if they worked. Installed
this on Vista 64 with dual cpu, nvidia graphics and 4gb ram. No
problems at all. And yes, DRM free. I was kind of surprised to find that
there was no cd key for activation. For me, this was an outstanding
purchase and will be worth the money spent.
