Amazon.com Review
Quick View Plus is a genie in a bottle just waiting to come out and grant many computer users their biggest wish: the ability to view multiple file types without the related application. So you don't want to put out the cash for eight types of word-processing software that your strongest clients use; or perhaps, you just want to get a look at a great proposal you downloaded off the Internet. Regardless, Quick View Plus is a strong concept that will help out in some of the tightest binds.

After installing, you can see what Quick View Plus can really do by personalizing the functions. You have several options that allow you to seamlessly breeze from file searching, file receiving, and file sending to file viewing. All in one step and in one place--on your desktop, in Windows Explorer, in your browser, or in your e-mail client--you'll be doing all of these things, saving you a lot of hassle and leaving more time for actually looking at your files.

Quick View Plus's strong suit is truly with traditional documents: word-processing items and spreadsheets. QVP's best features include:

  • Integration with browsers and Windows Explorer. Quick View Plus offers "pinning" (sticking or unsticking the application to the desktop, browser, or Windows Explorer, to bring you a one-stop file-viewing experience). Gone are the days of browsing your hard drive for a file, then viewing it by opening the related application. This also means no more system-resource problems on slower machines that don't lend themselves well to having a handful of applications open at once.
  • Increased e-mail productivity. Auto compressing is the wave of the magic wand that produces stellar effects. You can select your default file size to have Quick View Plus instruct your e-mail application to automatically compress attachments, both when you're sending and receiving. That way, you won't have to wait for the six minutes it takes to download those full-screen images of your coworker's vacation; instead, presto-chango into the zippiest of Zip files. Also, for the brave of heart and trusting of mind, Quick View Plus can also view (but not truly open) attachments automatically in your e-mail application's message window, streamlining your tasks to eliminate the necessity of opening a file's mothership application.
  • Near-countless file-type support. Quick View Plus supports 161 individual file types, plus numerous versions and releases of some of those. Again, its strongest points are the document-conversion possibilities: Word, from the early days to 2000; Wordperfect; and Excel are all represented. You can also view JPEGs, PDFs, GIFs, and numerous others.
Of course, there are a few caveats. While the list of supported files is extensive, do be sure to check it out before purchasing to ensure that your needs will be met. Those that are not supported in the usual Windows realm include Microsoft Works 2000 and Microsoft Access 2000. Additionally, it's good to know off the bat that PostScript, Photoshop, PhotoDraw, and Publisher files are not supported. --Emilie Dirks

Quick View Plus is the fastest, easiest way to view, copy, and print virtually any file--graphics, documents, spreadsheets, databases, presentations, Zip files, and more. With just a click of the mouse, you gain access to over 200 Windows, DOS, Macintosh, and Internet file types. View e-mail attachments with the original formatting, even if you don't have the originating application. Use attachment auto-zip to compress files automatically if they are too large, or create your own Zip files with Quick Compress.

3 out of 5 stars Quick View Plus...   January 26, 2002

As a JASC product, Quick View Plus is a bit disappointing. I am used to high quality products coming out of JASC, and almost always give them the highest recommendations. Although I would recommend Quick View Plus, not so much as other JASC products. Quick View Plus will open most any type of document, particularly helpful if you have to frequently change from Macs to PCs. I am a student at a University and as such sometimes use Mac files, mostly PC. Before purchasing this product, I was unable to view any files saved in Mac formats, now this is no longer the case. The files that it does view, however, range in quality from good to poor depending on the type. Poor quality, however, is still better than nothing at all. Quick View Plus is fairly customizable as to what it integrates with, and does its work when necessary without overburdening me. Another great feature is the archiving program. With Quick View Plus, you can create ZIP files for use, however I still prefer WinZip. If you are in need of a program for viewing formats not on your PC, then this is a program for you to look at. If you only occasionally need to view these kinds of files, maybe you should let the sender print you out a copy. For the price, it will all depend on how often you intend to use the program.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this only if you really need it   August 26, 2001

I was perfectly happy with the quick view built into Windows 98. But Windows 2000 doesn't have quick view built in, so I got this. This is expensive for something that does so little, but it does the job well. So if you are running Windows 2000 (XP?) and you miss quick view enough to pay the price, buy this; if not, don't.

It said it would open visio documents. It did but I could not read the labels. This rendereed the product useless.

5 out of 5 stars Quick View Plus 6.0   July 12, 2001

If you want to view and/or print files this is the program to have. Im from the old school and still like a hard copy of a file before I make any changes to it. QVP6.0 has everything you could ask for in a file viewer. It will view any file on your system. Very fast and easy, and the price is very good also...

5 out of 5 stars All Purpose File Viewer For Text and Graphic Formats   June 11, 2001

You are in the middle of a project and can't remember whether to use graphic1 or graphic2. Memory is so valuable so you don't want to load your graphics program just to see which file has the correct image. You are installing a program but you want to read a text file without having to load Word or even notepad. You are using "Find" to look for all files named "my file" but you don't want to load a program to see which of the various "my file" 'finds' are what you need. You have a folder for graphics but they range from .gif to .jpg to whatever. How do you weed out the duplicates or ones you no longer need without loading the image? You have a graphic in PhotoFinish .pcx format but you do not have PhotoFinish or perhaps someone gave you a WordPerfect file but you don't have WordPerfect. You are following a tree view in explorer but do not want to disturb the process by loading apps to see files; in fact you do not even know and are they word processor or graphic files. You are so tight on resourses one more program will most likely result in a crash. What do you do? For everyone of these problems, I right click, choose Quick View Plus and there is the answer. Freeware graphic viewers do not have text/word processor support. You'll get so used to a right click + Quick View Plus that you will not remember how you lived without it. If you are only to get one utility, this is the one. Try the evaluation (free trial) version and see for yourself. I can't give a URL but we are talking about a program from JASC software. In fact, I should be able to give out the URL for a free trial because you'll come running back here to buy it. Why? Because buying here is [at the time of this writing] is $20 less then what JASC charges. I've used Quick View Plus for years. I find it rock solid. I cannot imagine doing any serious computing or file sorting without it.
