New to DSLR cameras? Buying this book is a no-brainer. January 8, 2009 I just bought the Rebel XSi because I wanted to learn more about the basics of photography. I knew that the included manual wasn't going to cut it in terms of explaining basic concepts and theory. Ben Long does an excellent job at doing this while providing tutorials specifically for the XSi to apply this theory. An amazing book. I feel like I've been through a full photography course. More importantly, I know how to use my camera and will certainly have more fun experimenting with it.
Skip the manual, read this instead January 1, 2009 This book is great for those of us who have never used a DSLR before, but probably wouldn't be necessary for those who have. Great for the amateur photographer who just wants to jump in and start taking pictures without having to slog through the camera manual. I read through the manual first and was still feeling lost and confused. This book is an excellent reference because it explains exposure and composition plus it tells you how to find all the different functions on the camera. The author is great at explaining things without putting me to sleep.
There are several typos in the book, like maybe it was rushed to the press because of a deadline, but I was able to figure out what was being implied. The chapters flow well from basic camera controls to the most advanced photography concepts without seeming overwhelming. Overall a great reference for a great camera.
Must have for Canon XSi Newbies! December 31, 2008 The only reason I got this book was because it was part of Amazon's "best deal" package and it actually LOWERED the price of the camera. Basically I got this book for free and knocked $30 off the price. The fact that this book ended up being absolutely fantastic was a bonus.
My wife and I are complete DSLR newbies and we found the step by step instructions very easy to follow and by the end of the book we both felt like we had just taken a personalized Photography 101 course for our Canon XSi. The book provides great graphics to illustrate Ben Long's points and his tip and tricks throughout the book are very useful.
Some of the information regarding transferring images to one's computer was a no brainer for me, but my wife loved it. I breezed through the first part pretty quickly but once I got to the Photography 101 chapter I slowed down and took my time reading the information.
My wife and I are now able to enjoy our great camera a lot more now after reading this book. I am so glad that Amazon bundled this book as part of it's "best deal" package because I probably never would've bought it separately. If you are a newbie CAnon XSi DSLR user this is definitely a must have book.
Great book! December 29, 2008 I got this book as a xmas present to accomplish my newly purchased canon rebel xsi. the book is great for sb. like me, who has very limited knowledge on SLR and photography in general. It offers very basic knowledge on how the camera works, as well as all the good tricks you can get from this camera, i'm getting a lot from it in addition to reading the xsi manuel. Highly highly recommended.
Real instruction, examples, and advice from a real pro December 25, 2008 I've visited Mr. Long's website and looked at some of his work. He is an actual professional that likes to write reviews and books for the benefit of people looking into the art of photography.
For the most part, the book covers what the manual that comes with the XSi covers (and more of course). But that's not a bad thing, the manual is quite good and I would have hated it if Ben Long would have continuously said to refer to the manual instead of explaining it again. I like that he made this book all inclusive, meaning all of the new material he adds along with the old material you should have seen already in the manual. It makes it so you can replace your manual completely with this book instead of adding to it, and having to look back and forth if you're unfamiliar with dSLR photography.
He offers a lot of tips and tricks on what to do, what settings he recommends, and other things in every chapter, including those covering the basic functions. Knowing the basic functions is great, knowing how to best use them is better. He also provides a lot of tips and tricks on how to get good shots and end up with good photos. There are some fundamentals that he provides in this book that you can use on with any camera. Like how to properly hold the camera, how to compose your shot, and all of that stuff.
Every important aspect is illustrated with photos, not because you're too dumb to read, but because nothing beats actually seeing the end results of his tips or actually seeing which button he's talking about using to do what function. It makes for fewer mistakes down the road and gives you a better idea of how something is supposed to look like.
I really like it as a beginner in digital SLR photography. Before I only had a digital point and shoot camera (also Canon). I've always had an interest in photography but never had the money to get into the SLR's. This book is a must-have if you own a Canon XSi/450D. I also like that Mr. Long does not tease the reader for not knowing the basics like Scott Kelby does in his book Digital Photography. I would recommend this, and my friend who is a semi-pro photographer also recommends Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. I'll be reviewing that as soon as I finish reading it, just received it today.
