Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
In his work as research and development director at cutting-edge think tank TalentSmart, where he helps businesses work better and employees think smarter, Nick Tasler realized that the recent discovery by scientists of a potential-seeking gene could have a remarkable impact on how we understand decision making. Those who have this gene -- about one quarter of the population -- are endowed with impulsive tendencies that can lead to fast and decisive action or to foolish choices. The cautious majority that Tasler calls risk managers can make carefully considered decisions or become hopelessly lost in the fog of details. Now The Impulse Factor offers readers a unique online opportunity to analyze their own decision-making style and harness it to improve their everyday lives. Each book comes with access to a proprietary assessment developed specifically to evaluate impulsivity. With examples from business, psychology, and Tasler's own research at TalentSmart, the book also vividly illustrates how susceptible we are to the events around us and how our reactions often run contrary to our best interests.

By combining his research with real-world examples of extreme decision making, Tasler teaches readers how to thrive when faced with difficult choices. More than just a book, The Impulse Factor provides a clear understanding of why you make the choices you do -- and the tools to make those decisions change your business and your life.

4 out of 5 stars More detailed than I thought   December 30, 2008
I didn't expect this book to be as detailed as it was, even with references to scientific studies that took a look at genes that lead people towards different dispositions. I was pleasantly surprised that besides the anecdotal bits or true stories to illustrate a point, the author could easily delve down into science to back up what he was saying.

The writing style is light and easy to follow, never loosing you in the weeds or light/floaty enough to loose your interest -- it's written at exactly the right level I think for the types of folks that would be reading it.

2 out of 5 stars Statements of the obvious   December 28, 2008

I bought the audiobook version of this. The voice they chose is terrible. The first two sections are filled with banal blather about things that are obvious to most people. I stopped listening after that and am hoping for a refund.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, provoking book   December 18, 2008

The basic question that this book tries to answer is: Why do we sometimes do things that are rash? It presents numerous examples and case studies which present the question in different circumstances and how people responded.

If I could, I would give the book 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it, but I found it to be a bit tiresome after a while. It includes a code to take a test online to see if you are impulsive or not and in the book, gives advice about how best to harness your tendency. The advice part of the book was where I got bogged down. It seemed to be saying the same thing in different ways over and over again.

It is worth a read if you are interested in how people make decisions.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating but incomplete   December 9, 2008
Coming on the heels of Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions and Freakonomics [Revised and Expanded]: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything, this book looks at first to be another guide to Behavioral Economics, which seems to be all the rage nowadays. I eagerly ordered The Impulse Factor because it appeared to go beyond the other two books, by promising to personalize this subject and provide insight into the reader's decision making process.

The first part of the book is fascinating, full of interesting research and real-world vignettes ranging from the relationship between ADHD and risk-taking, to Dell Computer stock prices and pro football recruiting. The book is written in an irreverent but informative style, and is an easy read, though it was hard to detect a logical organization or a cohesive theme.

The second part of the book however is more disappointing. You are directed to an online test which purportedly identifies the reader's decision making style. The test is rather superficial and the results seem somewhat obvious, with the rest of the book simply expanding on the rather broad personality-type categorizations defined in the test. This part of the book is far less useful than I had hoped.

Nevertheless the first part of the book compares favorably to the other two mentioned above, and the application of this discipline to decision making and risk taking makes for an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinatingly Cool   December 4, 2008

Mostly I guess, I'm a bit shocked. This is exactly the sort of book that I love and I guess, had forgotten about, because all sorts of wonderful feelings came flooding back to me as I started getting deeper into it. I hate saying this but I think Malcomb may have lulled me to sleep without me even realizing it. This book on the other hand, popped me back to coherence.

This is a seriously splendid book.
Thank you sir, for reminding me why I love thinking.
