Inadequate details for truly advanced users December 16, 2008 I was a big fan of the previos Windows XP Inside Out book, but this one, on Vista, is a disappointment for someone like me who was looking for detailed information on every aspect of Vista. Granted, that's probably an impossible task for a one-volume book, however thick, but at least I was expecting a detailed treatment on performance topics. As Vista offers more tools to monitor and finetune performance, I was dismayed to discover that this book only offers perfunctory information; it doesn't even bother to explain all the information that's displayed in Task Manager or Resource Monitor, for instance. As another example, the three pages on ReadyBoost seem like they were taken from Microsoft's website, with *no* insight whatsoever.
I think the problem with this book lies in the authors' trying to fit a book about Vista on the same mold as an older book about XP. The content feels rushed. I'll check out the Deluxe Edition, which was published a year later, to see if it's any better, and will report later after I obtain a copy from my local public library.
Very useful, but somewhat biased September 10, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This book probably has just about anything anyone would want to know about Vista. It's big and thick and I assume that, because it's published by Microsoft, it's accurate. But because it's published by Microsoft, it's biased; you'd never find anything critical of Microsoft in the book, which only advises the use of a non-Microsoft software alternative if it's a situation that the Microsoft product just absolutely cannot handle.
In general, the attitude of the book is that Microsoft software has no flaws; if you can live with that, you will find the book useful because (shorn of the cheerleading) it's the most complete reference on Vista you can find.
A Valuable Guide to Vista September 1, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This Tome of 1100 pages by Bott, Siechert & Stinson, offers comprehensive guidance in the application of the myriad of facilities offered by Vista, to those who do not need to be a Geek!
Windows Vista Inside Out June 5, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Windows Vista Inside Out I didn't really need the book, just the eBook is just fine. I won't even need to open the book. I woul have rather have gotten just a CD which would have been a lot less expensive.

Well I decided to bite the bullet and give Vista a go. I'm glad I picked up this book, because I've learnt alot from it. I've found it to be well written, easy to understand and a very useful resource to have by my side when I need to work out how to do something in Vista.
