Going Green, One Day at a Time December 30, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've been trying to be more green this year by doing all kinds of little things, but I'm always looking for more ideas. My husband got me this book for Christmas, and I'm pretty jazzed looking through all the suggestions. There are tons of great ideas (365 to be exact!) for being more green. Helmer also blasts a bunch of myths. For example, I always thought it was better to roll down the windows while driving instead of relying on AC. It turns out that your car is more aerodynamic with the windows rolled up and the AC on. Or it's better to put your computer to sleep than to have a screensaver. I love that her tips are very down to earth--they really are things you can do right now that don't require spending a bunch of money. This book is perfect for someone who is into being green, but also for someone who is just thinking about being green, but doesn't know where to start.

Book Review: The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference (Alpha/Penguin, 2008) by Jodi Helmer
Jodi Helmer, a freelance writer of all things green has published a unique book for the New Year--The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference (Alpha/Penguin, 2008). Helmer extols the possibility of raising children in a green world because they deserve to live on a green planet. She believes that we can make changes in our lives which emphasize environmentally friendly living.
Many of us don't really know too much about green living beyond recycling bottles and newspapers and using LED light bulbs to save energy. The Green Year raises awareness of how simple it really is to add to our environment, rather than take away and never replace what we use.
Helmer's ideas are inexpensive, organized by date, and even help with holiday celebrations. An example begins with January 1st. "Recycle your Christmas tree. Christmas trees can be ground into woodchips and used as fragrant mulch in your garden or spread at a local watershed to prevent erosion. Rent a wood chipper with a neighbor or two and make your own mulch. Or go to [...] and enter your zip code to find out where to have your tree recycled." Now that's a pretty cool idea I hadn't thought of.
Each page has a new idea for 365 days. At the bottom of each page is a box for the reader to include his or her own ideas for the project which may even work better.
Sampling from The Green Year:
May 5: Use beer to keep slugs out of your garden.
August 7: Switch to recycled toilet paper.
September 17: Think about skipping an oil change.
December 6: Put your holiday lights on timers. (Did you do this this year?)
There's a volume of research inside the leaf-colored covers of The Green Year which is valuable information for everyone.

This book has a lot of suggestions that I hadn't heard before and they're very manageable! I don't feel guilty anymore for not composting b/c I can do a hundred other things that're much easier and quicker and that also help the environment.
Great guide December 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What I love about The Green Year is that everything is easily accomplishable on the day that the suggestion is shared (even when you have the busiest of schedules) and every suggestion is really affordable while creating savings for you. Helmer makes lessening one's carbon footprint practical and accessible while offering a good, succinct education on why these things matter. The book is great for an individual, but it also offers a neat opportunity for a family to tackle lightening their load on the environment together.
Practical and inspiring December 12, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this book. These aren't big, take-all-weekend projects. These are easy peasy things you can do every day to make the world a greener place. Love the format too. It helps make the whole 'going greener' thing a lot less daunting. This book would make a great gift!
