These days, Jeph Loeb can ruin anything November 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am the target audience for this book. I liked Supreme Power when it was coming out, I like most of the Ultimate books, and I'm sure I let out a nerdly "SQUEE!" when I first heard about this series. The real problem is the division of labor. Collected, this story reads like a game Bendis, Straczysnki, and Loeb were engaged in a writing exercise where the only story criterion was, "Squadron Supreme vs. The Ultimates, GO!" and they had no plan for how the story was going to end. Bendis and Straczynski's contributions are fun, but Jeph Loeb writes the last three issues and MAN, that part is not good. The style of the captions and the dialogue shifts abruptly, a bunch of new characters get thrown into a story I was wondering how they were going to finish in as little space as they had to begin with, and then it just kind of fizzles out. Additionally, they have Ultimate Thor being all, "thou" and "canst" which I find incredibly irritating and Greg Land (who used to be a decent artist) draws nothing but porn face on female characters. Seriously, the porn tracing is really distracting. He should go back to being a real artist.
Ultimately Awesome! October 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the Ultimate Universe at some of its best! All of the Ultimate Universe titles have been aimed at making the Marvel Universe more believeable for a modern world. This means no more spandex and origins that are a bit more gritty and believable. The Ultimate Universe is where Hollywood gets most of its cues for making movies about our favorite heroes.
In Ultimate Power you get to see, pretty much, the entirety of the Ultimates Universe versus the Supremeverse. Reed Richards, thinking he is helping his friend Ben Grimm, sends numerous probes to other dimensions in an attempt to turn his friend back to normal. In doing so he has apparently unleashed a biological weapon on one of these worlds who, in turn, send their worlds heroes to seek justice. Enter the Squadron Supreme! The battle ensues destroying the top of the Baxter Building getting the attention of not only the Avengers but Spider-Man and the X-Men as well. It becomes a battle royal which ends in Reed traveling to the Supremeverse to face his punishment.
There are tons of surprises in this book and the artwork is stunning. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a taste of something different but still kinda the same from Marvel Comics.
